F3 Engineering has applied its magnetorheological fluid-based shock and vibration technology to a new commercial product: a steering damper for high-performance motorcycles. Forming a separate company named F3 MotorSports, it has teamed with 14-time Grand Prix National champion, Mike Himmelsbach and most recently with the Aprilia USA motorcycle team, to continue development of the Mark I steering damper. The Mark I steering damper addresses the specific vibration and steering control issues faced in high performance racing. The Mark I is commercially available through the Tucker Rocky dealer network.
This F3 technological breakthrough was originally developed through a SBIR program awarded by Naval Air Systems Command (Navair) for the design and development of a side lateral engine mount for the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft. This engine mount mitigates both the harmful vibration caused by the plane’s turbine engines and the shock caused by carrier landings. F3 Engineering took this SBIR through to a Phase III.
